In the second half of the season, MEP Studio welcomes the British artist Johny Pitts.
Drawing on twenty years of visual research dedicated to the African diaspora in Europe and around the world, Johny Pitts presents his project “Black Bricolage” (Black DIY) at the MEP Studio. Photographs, archives, personal documents, and testimonies are interwoven through the use of mirrors, blurring, and collages to offer a subtle and nuanced representation of contemporary experiences of people of African descent.
A writer, filmmaker, photographer, and journalist, Johny Pitts (who lives and works in London) has developed a significant body of work centered on “Afropeanity,” a concept that refers to a sense of multiple cultural identities: being Black while having been born or raised in Europe. From London to Lisbon, via Brussels and Berlin, he engages with communities of African descent and brings back images of great formal and documentary power.
The recipient of several awards, including the European Essay Prize and the EM Forster Award, he has held solo exhibitions at the Photographer’s Gallery in London in 2023 and at Foam in Amsterdam in 2020. His work is also part of the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
