Born in the United States to a French mother and a Dutch father, Mark Steinmetz has been influenced by both European and American culture. Apart from a few trips to Italy and Paris, most of his work concerns the American South, where Steinmetz moved long ago, first to Knoxville, Tennessee, then to Athens, Georgia.
