Until May 28, the Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation in Arles exhibits Gilles Massot.
Beyond a discipline, Gilles expresses multiple expressions where the fabric of mixed stories is woven, imprinted with particular emotions, with the aim of giving us the elegance of the moment, carried by a constant flow of interior music. A dancer, he carries his energy towards an elsewhere, without borders, while being framed by the grid of the world, in particular through his studies of architecture. Dance offers intervals like the dial of time and space and makes it possible to adjust the vital flow that binds beings and makes us feel things. Gilles provokes this fleeting and succinct space-time to make it nimble. The exhibition Space Between Things is a desire for a retrospective of the work of Gilles Massot, whose red thread is the history of the image, its production and its reproduction. The exhibition is above all a question about the multiple connections that make up the multidisciplinary work of Gilles Massot, bringing together the traces of a large part of his life as an artist and traveling historian. The sequences of the exhibition refer to the process that underlies his work; a process that makes him establish over the years links between stories, techniques, occurrences and parts of the world. The selection of works are engaged as a decryption of the ideas and reflections of the artist on our relationship to the image, to photography and to creation; time and space, two themes at the heart of his quest. A pioneering look at the mixture of mediums, through theory, Gilles reveals to us a complex white space, an image in the making or already past and thus invisible. He offers us a rewriting of the history of photography, going through the beginnings of one of the first reporter photographer Jules Itier, to the mysteries of the pyramids of Egypt. The whole confronts globalization with the diversity and multiplication of uses.
