Wang Qingsong is an internationally renowned Chinese artist and the poster child of “Gaudy Art.” His photographs depict reenactments of famous paintings, through which he explores the past to understand (and sometimes condemn) the present, all while forecasting the future. They offer a critique of Chinese society’s imitation of Western ways of thinking and habits of consumption. By including himself in his own photographs, Qingsong acknowledges that he is also subject to the same criticism.
