Silent portraits by Denis Brihat on view at Manosque

Preview

In the south of France, photography tends to be flamboyant. Just eight days before the inauguration of the Rencontres d’Arle, Fondation Carzou in Manosque has launched a superb exhibition of Denis Brihat’s work.

After Hans Silvester and Peter Knapp, the Nuits Photographiques de Pierrevert in Manosque have extended an invitation to Denis Brihat for their 9th edition. A portraitist of plants and vegetables, Denis Brihat is a photographer-poet. A Provence resident for over fifty years, and a former professor and longtime friend of Alain Gualina (one of the pillars of the festival), Denis Brihat has the power to make even the most jaded eyes open wide in amazement at the sight of onions, eggplants, or a tuft of quackgrass.

It would be an oversimplification, and even incorrect, to call Denis Brihat a photographer of nature morte, since his images are a hymn to life. At best, one might apply to his work the English term, still life, but only if taken literally, to mean a silent or immobile life. For he brings to light, in both senses of the word, an entire world: it is, no doubt, a whole other universe, but one that is very much alive, full of marvel, that rejects the superfluous and finds its quintessence in Nature’s originality, wealth, and harmony.

The exhibition featured by Fondation Carzou as part of the Nuits Photographiques de Pierrevert retraces the photographer’s career through over sixty landmark works.
