With the landscapes of Northern France that compose the new series Horizons, and which are published under the same title by Editions La Pionnière, Eric Pillot surveys the immensity of seaside spaces in black and white. As Amina Danton writes, Eric Pillot, throughout these photographs, “relies upon the powers of light, the creases and folds of wind, water, sand, and land. (…) With patience, the photographer explores the possibilities of the space. A space where the black and white, the sky and water, the indoors and outdoors are reversible. Interchangeable. Each photo of the Horizon series potentially seems to be its own negative. Black and white speak to each other and could change places. Thus, the horizon, which cuts the surfaces in two with an often clean and seamless stroke, is not viewed only as a dividing line, but one that unites white and black, day and night.” It is a surveyor’s sensitive look at beauty, ceaselessly changing weather, its nuances and violence – the surprise of a moment of sun, the abruptness of a shower, the strength of a gust of wind – and takes infinite measure of these landscapes by capturing minute movements, the smallest irregularities, and makes these spaces, at first glance empty, true living pictures.
