David Turnley presents an exhibition at the La Belle Hortense gallery entitled: Paris – L’Amour et L’Espoir. It is accompanied by these few words:
David Turnley, Franco-American winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Photography, is considered one of the great photographer reporters of our time. Arriving in France in 1975 at the age of 19, he settled in a small room next to Notre-Dame de Paris and studied French at the Sorbonne. He then met the greatest photographers of the century, from Henri Cartier-Bresson to André Kertész who would become his major influences.
Throughout his career, David Turnley has worked in more than 90 countries covering every defining moment of the past five decades, from Mandela’s imprisonment to the Iraq War.
Far from the zones of conflict that have often marked his career, he has sought for 50 years to capture the soul of the City of Light, which he describes as “his spiritual city”. His photographs offer an intimate and poetic portrait of Paris, testifying to the diversity of its inhabitants and the beauty of its daily life.
David Turnley now lives in Paris with his family.
