Waiting for the Sun is the first all colour book by the photographer Josef Hoflehner, a photographer of dramatic, black and white landscapes and images in subtle colours. He generally prefers large format and likes to photograph empty spaces. This series is dedicated to the American car industry’s golden age. The 1960s and 1970s saw some of the best designed cars. The book’s introduction was written by Jakob Hoflehner, the photographer’s son.
“Hoflehner has a gift to create this kind of impression, and he knows how to maintain it”, explains Francis Hodgson, photography critic at Sotheby’s. “The best of his pictures can be looked at again and again, precisely because they ask us as viewers to test our conclusions and check our metaphorical reading. Not the least of the many virtues of Hoflehner’s pictures is that they simply insist that you be engaged when you view them. Hoflehner looks for something to think about as well as something to see. We can be sure that the reason he invites us to see the finished selection is because he has found something, even perhaps something not very important, in every single one of his photos.”
