“Appât de loup (Wolf bait) is the gathering of self-portraits of imaginary characters.
It is a journey back in time to the heart of an abandoned Europe.
It is also the persistence of a silence barely disturbed by the footsteps of a woman, one and the same woman playing a thousand and one others for a few moments.
Appât de loup, these are stories. Public, private and intimate stories.
Stories of poetry. Stories without words. Stories of the heart.”
Umbertha Richeux takes self-portraits in abandoned places using a manuel shutter release, always in natural light.
There is nothing classic about these self-portraits. Umbertha makes self-portraits of imaginary characters as she says. “A woman who plays a thousand and one others. Women with hair of fire, ash, sky, dressed in evening dress, tulle or their nudity ”. Her photos never fall into easiness or vulgarity. They are sublime, full of sensitivity, lightness and poetry.
This is Umbertha’s first book. She compiled a selection of her best pictures taken since 2012.
