John Doe Books presents Coustellet en photos, an exhibition by Sheppard Ferguson.
He has been photographing Coustellet for thirty years, offering a unique perspective on this atypical Provençal village, at the crossroads of the Luberon and the Monts du Vaucluse. This commercial and industrial crossroads, without much tourist appeal, has nevertheless evolved considerably over that time and has become a must-see for both locals and tourists. This exhibition of color photographs is a testament to this. Sheppard Ferguson tells the story …
“This exhibition brings me full circle. My very first one, in Boston, featured Provençal village houses, the Saint-Pantaléon quarry, and the Protestant community of the Luberon. It was in these places that I forged ties in the art and international book trade for twenty-five years before embarking on professional photography.
I photographed the stonemasons of the Luberon in their quarries images exhibited in Oppède, at the Maison du Parc in Apt, at the Requien Museum in Avignon, and in New York. This hamlet of Coustellet has always been familiar to me, long before the farmers’ market! I am delighted to add John Doe Books to it.
My cameras have always focused on current events and history: police abuses in Chicago, the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, the movement against the Vietnam War (I was a conscientious objector at the time), but also the reconstruction of historic buildings in Vietnam. Nevertheless, the environment in which we live every day, without paying attention to it, has always fascinated me. In Hanoi, I learned to swim in an ocean of motorcycles that I photographed and exhibited. At the opening of this exhibition, the Vietnamese Minister of Culture said: “Out of politeness, I came to see your exhibition. It surprised me. We never see everything that surrounds us…”
