Zvartnots Airport Terminal 1
My name is Jeremy Chamot Rossi, I am an architectural photographer based in Toulouse. During my last trip to Armenia, I had the opportunity to photograph the Zvartnots Airport Terminal 1 which has been abandoned since 2011. It was gradually abandoned for the new terminal. The transfer of the arrivals areas to the new terminal 2 took place in September 2006, that of the boarding halls in May 2007 and finally, in full in September 2011.
Built in 1971, it is one of the finest examples of brutalist Soviet architecture. Zvartnots, once the crossroads of Europe and Asia, is a historic building worth preserving, which threatens to be demolished.
The owners want to demolish the old airport further to make way for a multi-million pound extension to the new international terminal.
