Iwan Baan

Known primarily for images that narrate the life and interactions that occur within architecture, Dutch- born Baan collaborates with the world’s foremost architects, photographing institutional, public and private projects. He has worked with Rem Koolhaas, Herzog & de Meuron, SANAA, Morphosis, Frank Gehry, Toyo Ito, Steven Holl, Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Zaha Hadid, as well as young architects like Sou Fujimoto and Selgas Cano among others. Baan’s work is characterized by emphasizing the human, social and environmental context surrounding architecture around the world. Baan’s images appear frequently in The New York Times, Domus, Abitare and The New Yorker, among other leading publications. His work has been featured in museum exhibitions including Small Scale, Big Change: New Architectures of Social Engagement at the Museum of Modern Art and Richard Neutra in Europe: Buildings and Projects 1960-1970, which opened May 2010 at the MARTa Herford Museum in Germany and has since traveled to other locations. Baan’s work has also been included in exhibitions at the Architectural Association in London and the AIA New York Chapter. Baan’s book collaborations cover diverse subjects including SANAA Studios, the Porsche Museum, Steven Holl’s Knut Hamsun Museum and the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Boston. Iwan Baan received the inaugural Julius Shulman Institute Photography Award in 2010 and was named one of the 100 most influential people in contemporary architecture world by Il Magazine dell’Architettura in 2011.
