Issei Suda by Only Photography

The publishing house Only Photography was founded in 2008 in Berlin. Its director, Roland Angst, is a collector, bookseller, gallerist and of course an editor. He directs the graphic design of the photography books he publishes and follows every step of their production, done entirely in Berlin.

The Only Photography offices, near the Kurfürstendamm in the Charlottenburg neighborhood, house a gallery, bookstore, and an important documentary archive of photography books. Currently on display in the gallery is an exhibition of black-and-white prints by the Japanese photographer Issei Suda, which complements Only Photography’s recent publication of Issei Suda. The Work of a Lifetime – Photographs 1968 – 2006

Issei Suda was born in 1940 in Tokyo and graduated from the Tokyo College of Photography in 1962. He began his career as a photographer with Shuji Terayama’s theatre troupe Tenjo Sajiki, before devoting himself full-time to art photography. This book brings together 90 photographs from his 40-year career, showing scenes from cities, the daily life of children and young people roaming the streets, often alone, sometimes wearing traditional patterned costumes selected by the photographer.

Ferdinand Brüggemann, an art historian specializing in photography and the director of the Priska Pasquer gallery in Cologne, writes in the preface to the book: “Issei Suda perceives reality with a double eye. While acknowledging Japan’s leap into modernity, he relies on a centuries-old aesthetic style. In order to do so, however, he employs a visual medium that was itself introduced to Japan by the West. This is what I believe to be Suda’s originality: the tension between the ordinary and the singular, between tradition and modernity.”

Issei Suda. The Work of a Lifetime – Photographs 1968 – 2006 is limited to 500 copies with a choice of four different covers. Roland Angst always takes great care in the production of his books. His selection of paper, binding, and covers represents an honorable risk in the world of photography publishing.

The books published by Only Photography are available in a fine selection of bookstores worldwide and on its website. Since 2008, six books featuring the work of German, American and Japanese photographers have been published in 500-copy special editions, each with a signed print, some of which are now out of print.
