Les Fugitives, the latest book from Isabelle Nori, will be released by Contrejour in May 2015.
Les Fugitives examines the 40-something photographer’s vision of her two daughters, Elsa and Giulia, age 20 and 10, her surroundings and the horror and banality of a her mid-life crisis. Intrigued by this combination of ages of transformation, Nori, over the course of seven years, developed an intuitive technique to capture a presence, an attitude, a detail and discreetly snatch them away from fleeting reality. Sun- and moon-lit escapades from the ocean shore to the psychiatry ward, Nori’s photographs serve as intimate, silent and secret metaphors. This delicate attempt at reconciliation has been expressed by the author as, “the poetic artifice of being there together, with each of us continuing in reality to exist in an inaccessible world, simultaneously breaking free of the shackles to find yourself.”
The color and mostly small-format photographs reveal this relationship to the other at once near and far, giving the formally elegant whole a melancholic sweetness.
