What does it mean to call something “intimate?” Some of Petersen’s photographs could be seen as “stolen,” the result of an intrusion. But they’re nothing of the sort. His approach is based on the encounter with others, listening to their stories, and the friendship that may result from it. The models at the Café Lehmitz are as conscious as possible of his presence.
