Image Singulières 2013, Sète

This year the photography festival ImageSingulières is celebrating its fifth year. Held every spring, this year’s edition opened its doors on May 8. Under the artistic direction of Gille Favier, ImageSingulière hosts fifteen exhibitions featuring the work of international photographers like Roger Ballen (USA), Claire Martin (Australia), Martin Bogren (Sweden), Ad van Denderen (Netherlands), Eugenia Maximova (Bulgaria), Pierre-Yves Vandeweerd (Belgium), Hugues de Wurstemberger (Switzerland) and Marie-Laure de Decker (France), to name just a few.
Five years is not an anniversary, nor a date to mark on the calendar, it is more something to be proud of: the festival has turned a corner! ImageSingulières found its place on the photographic landscape by overcoming obstacles and in spite of limited means intends to continue its ambition to offer an innovative programation. The world is in turmoil: endless wars; social outcry; mafias; revolutions and sometimes, in the middle of this hotbed, some good news a very rare occurrence. The role of photographers is therefore crucial. They have the difficult task, amongst others, of recording these troubled times. It is important for us to support them and to defend their points of view. Gilles Favier, Artistic director of ImageSingulières

Each year, the festival invites a photographer to produce a portrait of the city. After Christopher Anderson in 2012, the association Cétavoir asked Gabriele Basilico to shoot the city portrait for the festival’s anniversary edition. He was forced to decline for health reasons, but offered to return to Sète in 2014. Unfortunately, the famous Italian photographer passed away last February.

The honor was then given to a young photographer from the Agence VU, Cédric Gerbehaye, who will produce the sixth book in the ImageSingulières collection.
