IMAGE 3.0 : Assemblage

Preview

Around the theme “Assemblage”, chosen by the City of Reims for its candidacy for the European Capital of Culture in 2028, the IMAGE 3.0 exhibition brings together the most recent digital and analogue artistic practices in the field of photography and ‘picture.

At the crossroads of art and science, the IMAGE 3.0 exhibition brings together the unpublished works of 17 artists working in France who benefited, in 2020 and 2021, from the eponymous national commission from the National Center for Arts in partnership with the Jeu de Paume, upon the initiative of the Ministry of Culture.

Resolutely oriented around new image languages, this commission aimed to encourage extremely contemporary writing by using innovative techniques: 3D printer, virtual reality, online platforms, computer modelling, eye sensors… It encouraged the use of all the digital resources to explore new techniques in dialogue with engineers, researchers and scientists.

The whole, shown here for the first time, draws up a very diverse, although not exhaustive, panorama of new modes of apprehending the image, of which it underlines the extreme multiplicity of contemporary forms: photographs on the wall, video projections, videos augmented reality, immersive installations, neuro-reactive works, animation generated in real time, virtual reality helmets…

But beyond this observation, the exhibition also highlights, from cybernetics to artificial intelligence, from facial recognition techniques to neurosciences, a certain number of questions around the challenges of the image today and of our highly mechanized relationship to these same images. Who creates the images – the human or the machine? How do we see – with the eye or with the whole body? What do we see – the real or a simulacrum? Where does one end and the other begin? The exhibition insists in particular on the questions of interactivity between the work and the visitor, the latter being led to deviate more and more from the role of simple spectator to become a full and complete actor of the exhibition and/or of the work, which in return has become more immaterial and open.
