Gustavo Gomes: –Por Ruas Distantes

Preview

The project Expofoto, created in 2005 by the Centre Culturel Oi Futuro, is presenting the work of the photographer Gustavo Gomes. Photographs from the series Por Ruas Distantes (Through Faraway Streets) will be on view until March 24 on the 8th floor of the Centre Flamengo de Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The exhibition brings together pictures taken between 2010 and 2012 in the streets of Cássia, the artist’s hometown, and São Paulo, where he now lives.

The exhibition could be a diary where Gustavo Gomes records moments from his life, with an emphasis on the contrast between the calm emanating from the small town in the state of Minas Gerais, and the commotion of São Paulo. Taken in the early morning and late afternoon, the photographs were all shot in natural light. His compositions favor color and visual interaction between the citizens and their surroundings. The result is graphic and spontaneous. “The photographs taken in Cássia, on the border between rural and urban areas, have a somewhat documentary aspect. The lens engages with the city’s development. These images have a certain distance, offering a contemplative look at the streets and its people. The photographs of São Paulo have a closer relationship to the places and the people passing by.”

Gustavo Gomes became a street photographer in 2009. A journalist by training, he is a member of the street photography collectives Street-Photographers (www.street-photographers.com) and SelvaSP (www.selvasp.com).
