Gaspésie 2014

In New Richmond, hikers may be surprised to discover amid the trees, Canadian artist Dina Goldstein’s pop series Fallen Princesses. This fascinating work, which was created from 2007 to 2010  has found considerable success on the internet,it stands out against the natural surroundings now serving as its exhibition hall.

Born in Tel Aviv, Goldstein began her career as a photojournalist covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict before deciding to create work that is  more personal . After working with different magazines, Goldstein began a project inspired by various elements of her life, placing “heroes” from fairy tales into modern-day reality: Cinderella lost in a bar, the Little Mermaid trapped in an aquarium, Rapunzel undergoing chemotherapy. Goldstein demystifies the cult of the princess through detailed stagings, twisting these flawless characters by imagining how they would respond to 21st-century issues: disease, obesity, cosmetic surgery.

After Fallen Princesses and In the Doll House, which shows the daily life of Ken and Barbie, Goldstein is currently working on a third large-format series named Gods of Suburbia in her Vancouver studio.
