Galeries de l’Instant –Photojournalistes #5

Preview

For the 5th edition of our «photojournalism» show, we present strong images from the best photojournalists.

Some photographs of New York after 9/11 by Mark Seliger, Larry Towell, Che Guevarra’s famous portrait by Korda and amazing animals by Vincent Munier. we try to get the audience interested and concerned by this kind of photographs, strong, sometimes hard, but who try to tell about our world.

We are trying to get our audience educated and concerned about that kind of photography which can, sometimes, be strong or disturbing As usual, we also show some new material from the photographers whose work we’ve been following for years, such as Paolo Pellegrin, Sebastian Liste, Kathryn Cook or Steve McCurry.

This year I also wanted to show the work of Stephanie Sinclair, a massive amount of hard work, time and dedication to a serious problem: the wedding of young girls to much older men, in today’s world.

For this work, Stephanie Sinclair has received many awards (Visa d’Or, World Press…), this story is simply unforgettable!

According to the photographer, 60 million girls are today, prisoners of a tradition from another time…

From our privileged lives, it’s barely bearable, for we feel so useless, and from a different world…

but for most of these families, from India, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and many more countries, daughters are often considered a burden, and for these people suffering severe poverty, weddings represent incomes or alliances with other families.

These children are losing not only their innocence, their virginity (sometimes at 5 years old!), but also their families, and an access to education… and even sometimes their own lives, victims of violent and abusive husbands…victims also of a way of life where the value of a woman, is only considered through being «a good wife».

I find it crucial to show these images to the general public, and to be able to tell these stories…
if thanks to information we can help out these kids, and support this great photographer, then this action wouldn’t be vain!
