Galerie Sophie Scheidecker presents a monographic exhibition by Dutch artist Justine Tjallinks.

Justine Tjallinks lives and works in Amsterdam. In 2014 at the age of thirty, then artistic director of the Dutch magazine L’Officiel, she decided to become an artist photographer.

The artist is above all a portraitist. She questions the traditional codes of beauty by upsetting the aesthetic standards of contemporary society. She seeks to capture with her lens the singularity of her models and is interested in the beauty of difference. Thus, the series Jeweled, 2016 deals with albinism.

Justine Tjallinks is inspired by ancient painting from the Dutch Golden Age in Fantastic Realism. This influence is particularly visible in the choice of refined colors, the balanced compositions, the abundance of details and the use of light.

If it is inspired by ancient painting, the work of Justine Tjallinks is above all contemporary. Her visual language gives her the freedom to play between fantasy and reality. She dresses her models in sophisticated clothes that testify to her scenographic creativity.

After drawing, identifying, choosing and photographing each of her models, she creates a virtual visual that she modifies with digital brushstrokes. This meticulous process gives Justine Tjallinks’ photographs an almost pictorial rendering.

In 2019, Justine Tjallinks won the Fine Art Photography Awards as photographer of the year. In 2020, she was one of the finalists for the Portrait of Humanity prize. Her work has been shown at Paris Photo and Photo London.
