Mois de la Photo OFF
Derek Henderson has a penchant for turning ordinary everyday scenes into mysterious beauty. His varied subject matter is united by an approach marked by a kind of democratic naturalism, where all phenomena is given equal attention. Although variously described as anti-heroic and anti-iconic, Henderson’s interest in the ‘ordinary’ can be deceptive and his narratives often reveal themselves to be more complex and unsteady than they first appear.
Photographies exhibited at Moaroom are part of two series of work. « The terrible boredom of paradise » is a journey through New Zealand capturing the reality of New Zealand small towns in 2004. ‘Mercy Mercer’ is a journey along the Waikato River, spiritual and material source of life for the maori and pakehas communities. An area where Derek’s mother spent her childhood and which carries distant and diffused family memory
