Galerie David Guiraud : Deep Space & Celestial Objects

Preview

The Galerie David Guiraud presents an exhibition on the theme of deep space, that is, the nebulae and galaxies of our universe that have been photographed from Earth. This feat is only possible from observatories and through their telescopes. And it is not the human eye that looks at the sky through the gigantic lens, but the light that arrives from the far reaches of the universe and is imprinted on the silver gelatin of the photographic paper, revealing what was previously unknown to human eyes.

This exhibition brings together some forty vintage photographic prints, taken between 1880 and 1930 and taken from major French observatories such as Meudon and American ones such as Mount Wilson and Palomar. Each image is a fragment of the sky, captured with patience and genius, using massive telescopes and sensitive plates. These photographs are much more than simple scientific documents: they are the first works of astronomical art, witnesses of an era when science mingled with the contemplation of the cosmos.
