Patty Carroll, winner of the BBA Photography Award 2023, presents Anonymous Women: Domestic Demise at Galerie BBA in Berlin.
In Domestic Demise, Patty Carroll examines the relationship between a woman’s identity and her domestic space. Each image in the series re-imagines interiors filled with a multitude of settings and objects, often engulfing a solitary female figure. Hidden in her surroundings, the figure represents both the victim and creator of her own domestic identity, exploring themes of societal expectation, obsession and artifice.
Carroll’s imagery is inspired by his upbringing in suburban Chicago and influenced by sources ranging from traditional still lifes to classic films of the 1950s and 1960s. Through these scenes, Carroll highlights the invisible work of housewives, while offering a satirical critique of the ideal of domestic perfection. Requiring weeks of preparation and featuring life-size sets meticulously arranged by the artist, these works invite viewers to engage with both humorous and darker undertones of women’s role in society.
Patty Carroll’sDomestic Demise is an exploration of the intersection of identity, consumer culture and domestic life, revealing the tension between societal aspirations and women’s personal realities.
