The place is called Le Couvent. This is one of the guest houses – art galleries of Apt in the Luberon. It houses until September 30th an exhibition entitled The Nuns, Françoise Huguier. On this occasion, Gerard Lefort had written this text.
In 2012, Françoise Huguier continued to delve into what doesn’t concern her, as she visits nuns in their convents in Bogota, Cali and Popayan, the three main cities of Colombia. What a funny idea when the news from the country is all about urban violence and latent civil war. So, the good sisters, seriously ? Yes, really, because the world of these women who have withdrawn from the world is a contemporary one. A religious world, in a country where 93% of the population practice Catholicism. A mixed race world, where you see written upon these faces enhanced by the veil the whole history of Spanish colonisation : this one could be a descendent of black slaves imported from Africa ; this one a Spanish woman from Castile ; this one, a native Indian. Françoise’s Sulpician nuns have come out of a prayer book where only the pious images have been retained. We think of Pedro Almodovar, filming some ambiguous Blessed Virgin. A real sister act.
