The festival FotoLimo, Festival Photography and Visual Arts Cerbere-Portbou takes place until September 29th.
This year’s theme: The border, an opening, a place of possibilities.
Claude Belime and Patrice Loubon, the artistic direction of FotoLimo, presents it as follows:
The border, a polysemic word par excellence, is the leitmotif of the FotoLimo festival.
The way we apprehend it often reveals our conception of the world, of its geopolitics, but also of our humanity.
In these difficult times, too many cynical forces want to transform frontiers into walls, into sharp, thin lines, into enclosures for a fatal withdrawal into a deadly closure. Too much strength wants to lead us to build illusory obstacles to others, to reject difference and the unknown in a deadly nationalism.
Closed on itself any organism chokes and dies. Without otherness we wither away. We need others.
This year we want to highlight a border that unites us. Far from the limit (that the English words “boundary” or “border” define better) it is in the acceptance of its thickness that we wish to approach it.
The border is a membrane system, an interface, it is the place of exchanges that feed us. This is where our worlds are built, in a cosmopolitan, internationalist and universal vision by refusing indetermination and dissolution, but by promoting addition, collaboration, sum rather than subtraction … together we are stronger, more alive. Just like those women and men who, on the edges of our territories, welcome, care for and love those who ask for help.
The border is a space of life, of creativity, of mixtures, a space of invention that allows us to build our future; the border can, must be this moving fringe of the borders, these marches of the territory where tomorrow is created.
The border is the place of art, of the creation of the sensible.
The frontier as a space of freedom, where we are no longer completely ourselves and not yet others, this no-man’s land of things, this fluctuation, this place of essential and primordial exchange, this continuity of humanity, of our humanity.
In this 2019 edition of FotoLimo we invite you to open your proposals, the border is the place of possibilities.
