Philippe Garner, the Director and International Head of Photography at Christie’s, gave the Eye of Photography an exclusive walk through the highlights of the over 200 photographs which will be offered at tomorrow’s sale in New York. When the photographs can be familiar on the pages of books and auction catalogues, it is a totally different experience to discover the scale of the physical object either minimalist or gigantic as you will in our film; Let alone the pleasure to have Mr.Garner talking about them and their authors with his customary passion.
Christie’s April sale of Photographs will feature over 200 exciting examples of modern and contemporary photography by such preeminent artists as Vik Muniz, Peter Beard, Richard Avedon and Manuel Alvarez Bravo. Highlights include a gorgeous portrait of Marilyn Monroe from Philippe Halsman’s famous Life Magazine cover shoot, offered on behalf of the artist’s estate; an early print of Dorothea Lange’s arresting Depression-era image, White Angel Breadline, originally given by the artist to fellow photographer Paul Caponigro; and several stunning works by Irving Penn, including still lifes, nudes and many of his most sought-after fashion images. This sale is preceded on April 3rd by The Range of Light: Photographs by Ansel Adams.
