The Collection of the Michèle Chomette Gallery will be presented at public auction at Hôtel Drouot on Friday, June 21, 2019 at 2pm.
Life and death of an art gallery dedicated to historical and contemporary photography.
On April 1st, 1985: a pioneer in Europe, Michèle Chomette opened her gallery at 24 rue Beaubourg.
December 27th, 2018: Michèle Chomette is forced to close the gallery.
June 21st, 2019: an auction disperses its collection.
The question then is whether this catalogue bears the mark of dishonor or whether it furthers a noble legacy? It will be up to you to judge.
I have just read the catalogue that the auctioneer Pestel-Debord devotes to some beautiful remains of my gallery’s collection, lying on my back in the medical bed to which I have been condemned since my stroke of May 3, 2017.
All this prevents me from studying it closely and applying to it the virtuosity of the hangings of the Galerie Michèle Chomette, the aesthetic accuracy of the confrontations and the assemblages of images.
I therefore thank the auction house for its work. This collection leaves me with a taste of bric-a-brac under my tongue, but with some treasures of vintage prints, which amateurs and connoisseurs will be able to find and acquire, to give them a second life in major collections, both institutional and private, both French and international, thus keeping the memory and spirit of the gallery alive.
