French photographer Marc Riboud (1923-2016), a long-time member of the Magnum agency, followed the great events of the second half of the 20th century. He liked to choose the countries he wanted to go to, often in the East and in China, and he traveled at his own pace, always with great independence of mind. Provincial, Marc Riboud first photographed Paris in 1953, then London and Leeds on the advice of Robert Capa, before setting off by road to India in 1955.
Marc Riboud has been published in major magazines such as Paris Match, Life, Stern and Géo. Winner of several distinctions and prizes, his works have been presented in many museums in Paris and New York or in Shanghai and Tokyo. It is thus astonishing that no major retrospective has been devoted to him in Germany to this day. The Suermondt-Ludwig Museum in Aachen now fills this gap. For the first time in a German museum, about 140 of Marc Riboud’s best-known photographs will be presented.
The exhibition is held under the patronage of S.E. Anne-Marie Descôtes, Ambassador of the French Republic to Germany.
