The Huawei Next-Image Awards 2020 have established themselves as one of the most popular and influential photography competitions given the record number of photos received: more than 1.19 million incredible shots, from more than 120 countries and regions, representing an increase of 128% compared to the previous edition.
Huawei has invited some of the world’s leading photography experts, recognized representatives of various styles, to select the winners of its 2020 Next-Image Awards. Iconic figure in contemporary photography Steve McCurry; Russian fashion photographer Elizaveta Porodina; Karolina Henke, Swedish photographer and curator of Profoto and Canadian extreme sports photographer Reuben Krabbe. They were joined by Andrew Garrihy, Global Chief Brand Officer at HUAWEI Consumer Business Group and Li Changzhu, Vice President of Consumer Marketing Strategy at HUAWEI Consumer Business Group.
The winners were chosen from six categories: 3 Grand Winners, 15 winners from different categories, 50 “Second Prizes” and 5 Honorable Mentions. Each Grand Prize winner received up to $ 10,000 from the Next-image Creation Fund, while the winners of the different categories received $ 1,000. All of the winners received a HUAWEI P40 Pro.
The grand prize winners, from Denmark, Argentina and China, distinguished themselves with the categories “Hello Life!”, ” Live Moment ” as well as the new category called “Storyteller”, allowing to shape collages made with several images; a new format to better tell stories.
The Grand Prize Winner – “Hello Life”
Danish-born winner Sune Pedersen captured the warmth of a grandfather’s embrace on his grandson’s birthday during the pandemic through his lens. It was the first time he had left his home in months and, separated by a plastic cover, he and his two grandchildren had a special moment of affection. Sune Pedersen witnessed this emotional moment and captured it with his smartphone. She moved everyone who saw her.
The Grand Prize Winner – “Storyteller”
Argentinian photographer Carloman Macidiano Céspedes Riojas used the smartphone’s camera to record a series of everyday moments. These images may seem unrelated at first glance, but combined, the peace and tranquility they exude are reminiscent of simpler moments. The image titled “Resilience” in the “Storyteller” category also received the Grand Prize.
The Grand Prize Winner – “Live Moments”
The third annual photographer’s award went to the work of Chinese artist Lin Haiyin. In this four-minute video, the horse master speaks the ancient Tajik dialect, telling the inseparable story of his people and horses for generations.
Also noteworthy is the French Alexandra Dinca who received an award with “Hide Out”.
