Originally shown at Galleri Format in Malmö (SE) and at Bladr in Copenhagen (DK), the exhibition, a failed attempt to photograph reality, reflects on the ontology of photographic images.
Rather than following a specific narrative unfolding, I follow my own attention, with the camera in hand, like a sharpened pencil and a notebook. I create subtitles to my own ongoing discourse about the nature of photographs, their being, and their role in shaping our perception.
This conversation with the world around me evolves into a dialogue – between the material, its contexts, and my own language. For the first time, I am also using the photographs as a starting point for my writing. An image title might stem from a thought I had on the day I took the photograph, a concern about a technical solution, or fragments of a conversation I overheard while walking with my camera – always related, yet never a direct explanation of the image itself.
The work carries a philosophical, humorous, and melancholic truth about our existence. It looks at surfaces: the most photographic forms of appearance. Some conceal depth, some reveal transformation, some mediate meaning, some reflect or distort.

Originally shown at Galleri Format in Malmö (SE) and Bladr in Copenhagen (DK), this online exhibition presents 165 gelatin silver prints made by Julian Slagman between 2022 and 2025.
Each photograph is going to be paired with a short text. A spontaneous, intuitive response – a memory, an observation, a note from the day the photograph was made.
By contributing you will receive a print and its hand stamped text in a small numbered envelope. In the ordering process you will be asked to write down the number of the image, that you have selected.
