Caretakers Of The Greens

Golf course caretakers arrive before the world awakens, rubbing sleep from their eyes, checking in, and receiving the day’s instructions—simple acts that begin a quiet daily ritual. Then, with a sudden cacophony of engines and voices, crews and machines fan out across the golf course, each heading to their assignments with purpose and quiet resolve. There is deliberateness in their movements, and heart-felt pride and steady dedication to doing the job well, as they personally care for the turf, landscape and sand.

Golfers step onto a course expecting watered, mowed and pristine manicured conditions. This project celebrates and recognizes the workers behind the curtain —those who toil each day at first light, preparing the course for the day’s events and the players. I found an unexpected beauty that accompanies these activities: headlights cutting through mist, ruts and tire tracks becoming graphic marks on grass, and skies that shift from indigo to magenta to gold as machines and workers move deliberately across the landscape. I framed these moments so the labor and landscape speak to one another— men toiling in the early dawn, machines gleam against dramatic horizons, uniforms and tools form a human geometry, and routine gestures become a kind of quiet choreography. The project is an invitation to honor the craft and artistry behind the immaculate fairways, and to honor the pride, dignity and artistry embedded in the workers behind this daily early morning labor.
