Robert Frank, known for his book The Americans, first published by Delpire in 1958, began his artistic career in the vibrant atmosphere of post-war Paris. The stays he made there between 1949 and 1953 influenced the rest of his life and his art.
It was in 1949 that he created Mary’s Book, a chronicle of Parisian life intended for his fiancée, who had remained in the United States. These few pages are bound together, combining cut-and-pasted photographs and handwritten text, in a mixture of French and English.
A key moment in Robert Frank’s personal life, it is also the genesis of his practice of the photo book. This way of arranging images on the page would reappear in all his books.
This unique publication features texts by photography historian Stuart Alexander and curator at the MFA Boston, Kristen Gresh, who pay tribute to the approach and artistic journey of this essential photographer.
