‘For a location to become a memorial… what matters is the fact that something artificial happened, some act that will mark the space. This artificial act is possibly the simplest form of what a monument is.’ Darian Leader, The New Black
In 2009 I traveled to the US for research, and began to develop a religious theme. I experimented photographing church road signs and was subsequently awarded an artist residency in Texas. This I recently completed, during this time I was able to produce a new series of work. The final images are multiple composites, shot using a panoramic mount system in order to carefully control details. The aim was to transform these everyday structures and imbue them with a monumental, shrine like presence.
