Starting June 13th, the first publication from the Ebifanany I collection by History in Progress Uganda will be released in Amsterdam: Le photographe, Deo Kyakualgira. This event will be held at the Galerie Johan Deumens to coincide with an exhibition of the photographer’s work.
The name of the collection, “Ebifananyi,” means, “to be similar to.” Several publications will be published in the coming months. All of them will be from various collections of Ugandan photography. It was created in 2011 by the founders of the project HIPUganda, Andrea Stultiens and Rumanzi Canon, who are working to digitize photographic documents in Uganda in order to preserve the country’s visual heritage.
Designed by Andrea Stultiens, this magnificent 256-page monograph allows readers to immerse themselves in the archives of this neglected Ugandan photographer. Deo Kyakulagira (1940-2000) was never exhibited in his lifetime. He worked in several studios, including Art Central Studio, Ltd., from the early 1970s until his untimely death in 2000. His work is made up of self-portraits, studio portraits, and commissions from the Ministry of Agriculture and the medical department of Mulago Hospital. Le photographe, Deo Kyakulagira lets readers understand his work and see how he documented the world around him. Essays put Kyakulagira and his working environment into context.
This first installment in the Ebifananyi collection will be followed in October by a new publication of the portraits Musa Katuramu shot in western Uganda.
