Etherton Gallery will present over a dozen never before exhibited vintage and modern photographs by Danny Lyon in Danny Lyon: The American Southwest, and Mexico. The show opens with a reception, at 7-10pm, Saturday, November 17th.
The exhibition will feature photographs from Lyon’s Southwestern Portfolio, which includes photographs of the Sanchez and Jaramillo families in Bernalillo, New Mexico, made between 1967 and 1983, and large format images made in Mexico during a 1973 road trip with the late writer, Harris Dulany. Also on display at the gallery, photographs shown in Lyon’s international traveling retrospective, which opened at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in June 2016.
Etherton Gallery has collaborated with the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona to bring Lyon’s new documentary film Wanderer (2017) to Tucson for its West Coast debut. Wanderer is the fourth in a series of films that began in 1971. It takes place in the town of Llanito, New Mexico, and updates the stories of members of the Sanchez and Jaramillo families, many of whom are also presented in the photographs on display at the gallery.
A film screening of Wanderer will be held at the Center for Creative Photography at 6pm, Friday November 16, 2018, followed by an artist talk, “Danny Lyon in Conversation with Chief Curator, Rebecca Senf,” on the same night. Attendees are advised to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the film to get a seat.
Terry Etherton, owner of the gallery has worked with the renowned documentary photographer for 37 years. As he said, “I am excited to bring one of the great documentary photographers and filmmakers of our time to Tucson. Although Danny Lyon’s career began in the 1960s, many of the photographs presented at the gallery remain completely unknown. And many people who are familiar with his photographs do not know his films. I am so pleased that we could collaborate with the Center for Creative Photography to bring Danny Lyon’s new documentary, Wanderer, to Tucson for its West Coast debut.”
