Circulation(s) 2013 –Virginie Rebetez

Preview

The approach to the “Packing” project makes its mark and follows a well-defined chronology. The artist photographs the clothes worn by people when they are dead; neatly folded then put in order, this clothes become exhibits though the medium of photography. This approach, made in collaboration with a funeral parlor, enables her to make hers objects which were bound to end up as trash because they have not been claimed. From these pieces without owners, traces of death, she then creates a collective memory based on trivial and approximate little stories. Starting from the disturbing mix of fear and fascination for death, Virginie Rebetez combines elements coming from reality with fiction to suggest an alternative to an inevitable ending.

Virginie Rebetez was born in Switzerland in 1979. A photography graduate from the école supérieure d’arts appliqués of Vevey (CEPV) and from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie of Amsterdam, her work lies between the reactivated archive, the autofiction, and a reflection about death, loss and oblivion.
