The exhibition « Hors-série, Favret / Manez » is presented at the Centre international d’art contemporain Château de Carros.
For more than thirty years, Anne Favret and Patrick Manez have been developing a major body of photographic work devoted to contemporary landscapes and inhabited territories. Their work explores the relationships between space, memory, uses and representations through an attentive observation of reality.
Rather than presenting their works according to a chronological logic or by established series, the exhibition Hors-série proposes a transversal reading of their work. Isolated images, fragments of series and recurring motifs are brought together in a montage arrangement that reveals the formal and thematic correspondences running through their entire output.
This approach shifts the gaze from the represented subject towards the way in which the photographs construct our perception of landscape and territory.
BIOGRAPHY
Anne Favret & Patrick Manez began their work in 1989 with a photographic series on motorway landscapes (50 ans de photographie française, Michel Poivert, Textuel, 2019). They continue a reflection on inhabited landscapes, territory, its history and its uses, weaving a body of work that unfolds across exhibitions and publications. They have published several books: Alexandrie (Hazan, 1994), Les arpenteurs (text by Michel Poivert, Loco, 2014), L’aire de rien (text by Bruce Bégout, de l’air, 2022)… They participated in the Observatoire National Photographique du Paysage, on the subject of Montreuil, and exhibited in the framework of the Paysages français exhibition (BnF, Paris, 2017). In 2020 they received the Soutien à la photographie documentaire contemporaine from the CNAP for their project « Europe le plan B », which gave rise, in 2025, to the exhibition « Alimentation générale, une traversée photographique », presented by the Forum d’Urbanisme et d’Architecture (Nice) with curatorial direction by Marc Donnadieu. They use photography as a tool for exploring ways of seeing, and build, across exhibitions, photographic narratives that may be structured by a traversal, « Hyperborréal »; a topography, « Format à l’italienne »; a cartography, « Montreuil paysage public »; a history, « Europe le plan B »; or a fiction, « Les arpenteurs ».
The exhibition « Hors-série, Favret / Manez » at the Centre international d’art contemporain Château de Carros holds the national « Bicentenaire de la Photographie » label awarded by the Ministère de la Culture in the context of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the invention of photography. Selected following a national open call, this label distinguishes initiatives of particular artistic and scientific rigour and places them within the official Bicentenary programme, running from 1 September 2026 to 30 September 2027.
