This third roundtable was moderated by Natacha Wolinski, a journalist at Quotidien de l’art. The subject was “support for photography,” and, essentially, “prizes.”

Christine Raoult is the head representative for the Prix HSBC for photography

The Prix HSBC was founded 18 years ago by Chantal Nedjib. Every year it offers more than a simple grant, but also comprehensive support for two young emerging photographers over the course of a year, during which a touring exhibition and a co-edition with Actes-Sud are put together.

Photography was chosen over other visual arts like painting for the values of openness, accessibility and expression it conveys, and which, by placing itself in the heart of society, corresponds to the expectations of the customers of our bank. The value is not financial. The company adheres to the human values of sharing and open minds, and our employees increasingly become involved in visits, discussions and so on, since they are surrounded by photographs.

Of course becoming involved in the production can pose a risk, but the quality of the work and the jury minimize that risk, and the careers of past Prix HSBC winners show that the right choices were made.
