CHIPP 2015

Preview

More foreign photographers than ever participated in the China International Press Photo Contest, an international photography competition organized by the Chine Nouvelle agency and the Chinese Society of Photojournalists for the 11th consecutive year. Photographers from 57 countries submitted a total of 25,000 pictures, much less perhaps than the hundreds of thousands submitted annually to World Press Photo—CHIPP aspires to be its Chinese equivalent—but a major success in terms of the quality of the work. Many Chinese photographers submitted their work to the CHIPP jury, of which I was lucky to be a part alongside my American, Canadian, Chilean, Brazilian, Egyptian, Bosnian and Chinese colleagues.

The CHIPP jury met from March 19th to 23rd, 2015, in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, famous for its pandas and pepper. It’s a little town of 15 million, two hours from Chongqing, population 30 million!

Over the course of three 12-hours days, we pored over 7,500 photographs in eight categories, selecting the photo of the year that earned the photographer 15,000 euros and a trip to Chengdu in June to receive the prize, as well as three prizes of 1500 euros for each of the categories.

I encourage readers to submit their work for next year’s contest, which is divided into eight categories: Daily Life, War & Disaster News, General News, Science, Technology & Culture News, Nature & Environment News, Sports News, People in the News and Portraits.
