Chicago: Melissa Ann Pinney at Schneider Gallery

Preview

I’ve always been interested in watching people together. I wonder what their story is, who they are to each other.

My mother was acutely aware of other people and she was quick to share her thoughts. Her observations were sometimes caustic, sometimes funny, always insightful. That must have been where I first learned to pay attention to the world around me, to see with a sharpness, the way my mother did, the exchange between two people.

When I discovered photography it became both my way of seeing and of commenting on my observations all at the same time. For me, making pictures begins with the desire to find what light and time can reveal. My work is grounded in attentive observation of the world– a richer and more surprising source of imagery than anything I could invent.

No matter how uninspired I feel, how dull a place appears, when I look at the world through a camera a new beginning takes place. We’ve all heard stories of people who find their heart’s desire the minute they stop looking for it. What I found when I wasn’t looking were pairs of every manner and kind.
