On the occasion of a residency organized by the GwinZegal Art Center, the couple of artists Cécile Hesse and Gaël Romier came to continue their creative work in Brittany.
They found, in thetidal flat of the northern coast of Brittany, the perfect theater for their actions.
The choice of tidal flat is not insignificant, at the limit between two worlds, the land and the sea; one material and restricted, the other inviting to an elsewhere in connection with the cosmic forces, carrying a reverie that touches the origins of being and the world.
No human figure clutters these landscapes, where we read at most some hybrid forms at the edge of the animal,of mythology and of plant life.
The artists chose to operate at night, in the dark, clandestinely, as if to commune in this feeling of uncertainty and subjectivity, familiar to the first men.
The production of the Hesse & Romier images is the result of a meticulous staging: scouting, preparatory sketches, casting, lighting, nothing seems left to chance.
The juxtaposition of objects, signifiers and situations builds the foundations of a new tower of Babel.
It is in this shift that Cécile Hesse and Gaël Romier define barbarism: when images take power, they express themselves and challenge us in a foreign language, they are born and exist in a universe that is their own.
