The exhibition Thomas Hoepker: Stories of Humanity in the CAMERA WORK Virtual Gallery until January 8, 2026, pays tribute to the life’s work of Thomas Hoepker, featuring 35 works from the photographer’s œuvre. As a master of concerned photography, he focuses his gaze on the human condition. Accompanying the exhibition, a photo book of the same name was published by teNeues Verlag in early November.
The exhibition showcases works spanning roughly five decades, uniting world political events, influential figures, and everyday moments. They unfold a panorama of human experience and testify to Thomas Hoepker’s unmistakable flair for observation and storytelling.
The selection from the retrospective highlights the diversity of Thomas Hoepker’s photojournalistic work and his significance as a representative of concerned photography. Hoepker’s photographic work can be characterized by his precise powers of observation and clear, analytical visual language. These illustrate how he not only documented political and cultural events, but also lei room for social aspects. The combination of documentary realism and a humanistic perspective results in an analysis of social conditions that encourages the viewer to critically examine the situations depicted. Hoepker’s approach makes it clear that for him, photography was not merely a means of representation, but an instrument of insight and ethical positioning.
Thomas Hoepker (1936–2024) discovered photography early on as his defining form of expression and made it the center of his life. After receiving his first awards during his studies, he began working for Stern magazine in the 1960s, where he set standards as an important photojournalist and later art director with his photo reports. In 1989, he became the first German photographer to become a full member of the renowned Magnum agency, of which he was president from 2003. Hoepker’s work is characteristic for concerned photography, which captivates with its humanistic approach. His photography is defined by compositional precision and historical depth, are exhibited worldwide and are part of renowned public and private collections.
