Le Loft Photo is a new spot dedicated to photography in Brussels. It is unveiling Incarnations, a new exhibition of works by artist Claudia Vialaret. The show includes around thirty works, coming from several series made between 2009 and 2015, some of which are unpublished.
In a chronological presentation, Claudia Vialaret gives life to the iconic portraits of art history through the medium of photography, using different processes such as image projection, paper crumpling, changing points of view…
For example, in the series “From the Other Side”, Claudia Vialaret plunges us into the famous Ingres painting “The Valpinçon Bather” and shows us a different point of view than that of the painter. By placing herself in front of the model, she reverses the image, giving a face to the bather and imaging her environment. The same treatment is given to the stunning large-format photograph inspired by Tintoretto’s painting “Susanna and the Elders”.
The series “Double Portraits” is a tribute to the great portraitists throughout art history, from Leonardo de Vinci to Courbet. Claudia Vialaret’s delicate portraits intimately mix the painted faces of yesterday with those photographed today, revealing through its metamorphosis the permanence of human expressions. The round portrait inspired by Ingres is a colorful example. Beginning with the disposition of Rodin’s famous sculpture “The Thinker”, Claudia Vialaret multiplied the points of view by circling around her model. She created three “Thinkers” in this manner, which are broken down into time and space, forming a large triptych of shadows and light.
“Weeping Women, Crying Men” is a series inspired by cubist painting, evident in its fragmentation of images. Men and women are contrasted through lively colors and expressive attitudes.
