Brisbane: Katrin Koenning – Near

Preview

Everyday moments of an international family made of dreamers, architects, dancers, engineers and therapists are captured in “Near”, the latest exhibition of multi-award winning photographer Katrin Koenning at Brisbane Powerhouse from Wednesday 26 September.

According to Katrin “Near “is a celebration of her family and of small moments of their life.

One morning in 2005 I woke and, with a sudden immediacy, feared the fragility of things. What if tomorrow someone close died? In an ideal world, my family will always be there. But they won’t, at least not in a physical sense. I needed to photograph those transient moments of intimacy shared only between us, yet common to most.
I needed to investigate what is ultimately the centre stage of my life, and to explore complexities and challenges of family love. I wanted to see if there was such a thing as family identity. That morning “Near” was born – it is an ongoing portrait of my family.

German-born photographer Katrin Koenning currently lives and works in Melbourne. Her work has been shown at international photography festivals such as Noorderlicht, Delhi Photo Fest, FORMAT International Photography Festival, Reportage, Voies Off, HeadOne and the Gijon International Photojournalism Festival.

Katrin has exhibited widely, and her work has won a number of awards including the JGS Award by the Forward Thinking Museum, an IPA Award, the Troika Editions Format Exposure Prize, the HeadOn Portrait Prize Critics’ Choice Award, a Julia Margaret Cameron Award, a <em<National Geographic Award, and the APJ Award for Most Outstanding Documentary Photography.
