Book: Waldersbach by Sylvain Maestraggi

Preview

Last December, publisher L’Astrée Rugueuse released Waldersbach, the latest book of photographs from Sylvain Maestraggi.

In the winter of 1778, J.M.R. Lenz, a young German writer plagued by fits of madness, found refuge with Pastor Oberlin, in the Ban de la Roche region of the Alsace Vosges. A dialogue between them ensued, and sixty years later, Georg Büchner discovered the pastor’s papers, which inspired his novella Lenz, one of the most beautiful works of German literature. Lenz became the melancholy traveler, exalted by nature, tormented by fate. Through the photographs of Ban de la Roche in winter and fragments from the novella, Waldersbach invites the reader to walk a mile in Lenz’s shoes.
