Bill Lane – Soiled

Preview

Soiled, disrupt the obsessive aesthetics of commercial “Still Life” photography to construct “gross” words from cheap mass-produced nature referents.

Words like moist, suck and squirt (among others) make many people cringe. This is technically known as logomisia, although it’s commonly referred to as word aversion.

By physically making these words from ‘nature’ commodities the work aims to manifest the ambiguous nexus between our idealisation, commodification, and revulsion towards nature.

One outcome of this strategy is that the combination of objects and words inevitably creates an expectation of meaning. Careful word/object selection within the project aims to suppress potential meaning and manifest an implied emptiness. Thereby aligning the emptiness of commercial photography with our ambivalent attitudes towards nature? – Bill Lane
