Au jardin des Dames : Nataly Robert : Vietnam « Présences »

Preview

Until September 30, Au Jardin des Dames in Toulouse presents an exhibition by Nataly Robert entitled Vietnam “Présences.”

A French-Vietnamese photographer, Nataly Robert was born in 1970 in Vietnam.
Nataly left her native country in 1973, two years before the end of the war.

Today, the photographer shares some images from the work she has been doing for over 25 years on Vietnam. Her approach is a blend of quest for identity and a reappropriation of her native culture. She explores her country in search of authenticity, which she discovered in a rural, peaceful way of life far removed from the hustle and bustle of the contemporary world. “I am nostalgic for a country I know little about, for an imaginary past confused with my mother’s memories. This story is my mother’s, that of all those who have known exile, those who have left their roots behind. In this exhibition, which is also a book, photography is the medium that allows me to immortalize the images of yesterday, in search of authenticity and identity. Writing the past in the present, bringing history back to life as a duty of remembrance… This journey resembles a long wandering through Vietnam, of a bygone era from which I try to extricate the buried memories that would bring me back to the starting point.”
