Athens a new Photo Research Center

Preview

The Athens Photo Festival is excited to introduce the Athens Photo Research Center (APhRC), a new institution devoted to contemporary photography and visual culture in the heart of Athens.

APhRC is structured around five foundational pillars — the Library, the Education Programs, Research Activities, Artist Residencies, and the Public Program. These pillars work together to promote transdisciplinary dialogue, and diverse and experimental approaches to practice.

At a moment when artistic and academic freedoms face increasing pressure, APhRC is committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and artist-centered environment. The Research Center creates a permanent home for Greece’s largest photobook library, educational initiatives, artistic development, and photographic research. With a program shaped by international and local practitioners, theorists, and curators, the APhRC creates fertile ground for learning, collaboration, and critical engagement. Its position in Athens—a city shaped by movement, multicultural histories, and shifting borders—deepens its commitment to voices and contexts often overlooked within global narratives.

This launch marks an important new chapter for the festival—extending its mission throughout the year and opening its doors to a wider public.
