Dirk Hardy, NL 1989
In his ongoing series, Vivarium, Dirk Hardy constructs meticulously detailed, cinematic worlds ‘Episodes’ that serve as mirrors for the complexities of the human condition. In the latest Vivarium works, Episodes 11 to 14, Hardy turns his lens toward the multifaceted theme of fatherhood, exploring it not as a static role, but as a lived experience shaped by memory, responsibility, and the passage of time. While each Episode stands alone as a singular narrative, their togetherness reveals a profound dialogue on what it means to be a father:
Moving beyond traditional archetypes of stoicism, these Vivarium Episodes highlight the tenderness and fragility inherent in the paternal bond, portraying fatherhood as a delicate act of world-building for another person. By placing these four Episodes in conversation, Hardy invites us to witness fatherhood as a ‘Vivarium’ in its own right: a controlled yet unpredictable environment where love, duty, and identity are nurtured under the warmth of observation.”
“As a child, Dirk Hardy (born 1989, Boxtel, NL) dreamed of becoming an architect to design places and spaces for people to live in. He studied Architecture at Eindhoven University of Technology and turned to photography in 2010 at Willem de Kooning Academy. Today, as an artist, Hardy researches, constructs, and photographs imagined worlds within his studio.
Hardy explores the complexity of life in an idiosyncratic and empathic way. His meticulously constructed and socially engaged tableaux shine light on human existence. In the creation of his worlds he fuses his imagination, personal memories and true events into ‘purposeful fiction’.
